Introduction
I am sure that many of you have heard the complaint that “Vietnamese people have many beautiful women. However, doesn’t this image stop at “beautiful women in ao dai standing in nature”?
Just as popular styles, actresses, and idol groups change in Japan, so do popular styles, actresses, and idol groups in Vietnam.
And people’s sense of beauty is greatly influenced by these trends.
In this column, we will dissect the latest beauty values of Vietnamese women.
What Kind of Country Is Vietnam?
Vietnam is one of the countries in Southeast Asia, located northwest of Japan.
The country is long and narrow from north to south, and is characterized by differences in people’s temperament, food, culture, and language accents between the northern, central, and southern regions. In addition, Vietnamese culture has historically been influenced by China, France, and other countries.
Many Vietnamese people are pro-Japanese, and many are learning Japanese. Pho, a dish made of rice-flour noodles that has recently become common in Japan, is a typical Vietnamese national dish.
Vietnam also has a large number of working women, and is a country where women are more advanced in society than in Japan. In addition, there is a discourse that “there are the most beautiful women in Asia. The general image of Vietnamese women is probably created by these factors.
Characteristics of Vietnamese Women
Many Vietnamese women are cheerful, laugh a lot, and are family oriented and caring. Many of them are also hardworking and stronger than men. It can be said that many of them have what is known as a “motherly” spirit.
This may be true for women in any country, not just Vietnam, but many women in Vietnam have a strong sense of beauty, follow the latest cosmetics, and are strict about health care. In fact, sales of cosmetics and health care products are growing every year in Vietnam, and household surveys show that the percentage of spending on cosmetics and health care products is increasing. Thus, few women smoke cigarettes.
In the past, Vietnamese were relatively short in stature and many women were slender, but recently in Vietnam, the diet has changed along with the modernization of life, and the number of glamorous women seems to be increasing. In fact, in Vietnam, the obesity rate among children in urban areas has increased approximately 10-fold over the past 10 years.
Of course, as mentioned earlier, there are many Vietnamese, both men and women, who care about health care.
Good Style
The ao dai is a very well-known traditional Vietnamese costume.
Ao (Ao dai) means clothes, and dai means long. Ao dai is often misunderstood by those who don’t know about it, as if it were a Chinese dress. It is true that ao dai is similar in appearance, but it is often worn with a small amount of clothing. It is true that they look similar, but they are slightly different.
The similarity between the two costumes is that the style of the two is directly reflected in their clothing. A Chinese dress is a single piece with a top and bottom, while the Vietnamese ao dai has a separate top and bottom, with the bottom being pants. The material of the fabric is also different.
In recent years, few women in urban areas of Vietnam wear ao dai, but in rural areas, students are required to wear white ao dai to school on certain days and teachers are required to wear ao dai on a daily basis. There are also many women wearing ao dai in tourist areas.
Women wearing ao dai also look very stylish. Their legs are long, their faces are small, and their backs are slender and straight.
The high aesthetic sense of young Vietnamese women these days will make ao dai look even more beautiful.
Tend to Be More Family Oriented
Vietnamese women have a strong sense of responsibility, and many women put their families first. Perhaps it is a remnant of wartime, but even today, women tend to do the housework. The same was true for my mother. At the same time, as women are advancing in society, I feel that there are many strong women who are able to do both housework and childcare.
In addition, many women are busy with work and child rearing, but are also thinking about their families. This is also true for men. Many of them go back to their hometowns for long vacations and cherish their interactions with their own parents and relatives. Many also send a large portion of their salary back home to their families in Vietnam, even though they are working in a foreign country like Japan.
Why Are There So Many Beautiful Women in Vietnam?
Here are some of the reasons why many Vietnamese are said to be beautiful.
Historical Background
There are several possible reasons why there are so many beautiful women in Vietnam, but it is believed that Vietnam’s historical background is a major factor. Vietnam has experienced many wars, and many children were born to Vietnamese and people from non-Asian countries such as France and the United States, and many of them still have their blood mixed in their veins.
Therefore, it is said that the beauty of the region is different from that of other Southeast Asian countries, blending the originally Asian beauty with that of the West.
Increased Awareness of Beauty among Vietnamese
Another reason is the aforementioned high individual awareness of beauty. Of course, the desire for women to be beautiful is universal, but when I look at Vietnamese women in particular, I see that they have a very high sense of beauty and health.
As a result, the city has many beauty clinics and other stores, esthetic clinics, and cosmetics stores. In addition, beauty-consciousness is high in many places, such as in restaurants, where beauty and health-conscious menus are popular.
Recently, the influence of Korean idols has been strong in Vietnam, and it seems that not only women but also men are becoming more beauty-conscious. It seems that many men are also becoming more knowledgeable about makeup and beauty.
Vietnamese Food Culture
It is no exaggeration to say that food culture is the foundation of beauty. Vietnam has its own uniquely developed “Vietnamese cuisine,” which is characterized by many healthy dishes. This may well be one of the reasons why there are so many beautiful women.
The staple food in Vietnam, as in Japan, is considered to be rice. In Vietnam, many dishes are made with cooked rice and “Banh Pho,” rice in noodle form.
Pho, a typical Vietnamese national dish that has many Japanese fans, of course, uses rice-flour noodles and is considered relatively healthy. The noodles are dried, so no oil is used, and moreover, they are gluten-free.
Since they are originally rice, they are not low in calories, but foods made from wheat flour contain gluten, which has the effect of promoting appetite and acne. Therefore, rice-flour noodles may be a better food from a cosmetic standpoint.
The soup is also simmered for 10 to 12 hours or more along with chicken and other meats and spices, and the flavors are adjusted at the finish before being served to the table. The dish is made with simple ingredients and cooking methods, without using a lot of oil, and is considered to be good for the body.
Another reason is that Vietnamese cuisine is rich in vegetables. Many people may think of “pak choi” when they think of Vietnamese cuisine.
Pak choy is a savory herb that is very rich in beta-carotene, which can help the body fight aging and has beneficial effects on the skin. In addition to pak choi, many other aromatic herbs and leafy greens are also used in Vietnamese cuisine.
And in Vietnam, it is customary to eat fruits as well as vegetables on a daily basis. Many women like fruit, and in the streets of Vietnam, there are many stores that sell smoothies made with fruit or juice called “Nuoc ep (nước ép),” which is 100% fruit juice squeezed directly from the fruit.
This kind of food culture supports the health and beauty of not only Vietnamese women but also Vietnamese people.

However, she has a bit of a troublemaker streak: during an appearance at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, she drew criticism for wearing a dress with a wide open slit at the bust and legs. Since then, she has frequently posted on social media, touching on sexual issues, which has become a problem.
She has an attractive glamorous style, which is probably why she usually seems to be clad in revealing dresses and outfits. In fact, her posts on Instagram are often very revealing.
Ms. Ngoc Trinh is attractive in that her atmosphere varies from time to time, with her wide-open eyes looking crisp in different photos and her face looking cute when she smiles. Despite her various problems, her face looks somewhat childlike when she smiles, which may be the reason for her continued popularity.

Vietnamese Beaty Accounts on Instagram
Many Vietnamese women like to take pictures, and many of them use Instagram. Although the overwhelming majority of people in Vietnam use Facebook, Instagram has also recently seen an increase in the number of users in Vietnam, especially among young people. The range of posts is gradually expanding to include fashionable photos and introductions to cafes and restaurants. There are many so-called “Instagrammers” in Vietnam, and they are very popular. Celebrities also use Instagram to post their activities and their personal lives, and I feel that one of the reasons for their popularity is that you can see a side of them that you cannot see on TV.
And if you want to see what non-actress Vietnamese women look like, you can search Instagram using the Vietnamese hashtags #phunu, #phựnữ, #phunudep, and #congai.
Incidentally, the Vietnamese words “phụ nữ” directly translates to woman or lady, and “con gái” means daughter or girl.

Vietnamese Women’s Idea of What Makes A Beautiful Woman
What kind of women do Vietnamese women consider beautiful?
Beauty Regarding to Appearance
In general, after all, there are many women in Vietnam who strive to be thin. This way of thinking about their body system has a great impact on the sense of beauty that people have. Perhaps Vietnamese women think this way because they have the opportunity to wear ao dai.
Many Vietnamese women consider it important to have a high nose and double eyes as other points of interest. In recent years, many women have a complex about their low noses or single-layered eyes and have resorted to plastic surgery. This is probably true in Japan as well.
Fair Skin
Vietnam is close to the equator and receives very strong sunlight. In fact, solar power generation is very popular in Vietnam, and the government is leading the way in installing panels. During the daytime, when the sun is at its highest, even Vietnamese people refuse to go outside, which is encouraging from an SDG perspective, but sunburn is also a major enemy for Vietnamese women.
Most Vietnamese women are very prepared for sunburn, using sunscreen, parasols, sunshade jackets, and a cloth wrapped around their waist to protect their legs from getting sunburned when riding a motorcycle.
In addition, many sunscreen creams and supplements containing ingredients that whiten the skin are sold and are very popular among Vietnamese women. Japanese sunscreens such as Bioré, Skin Aqua, and Anessa are also very popular, and are recently available at many drugstores.
It is believed that Vietnamese women, like their Japanese counterparts, consider the whiteness of their skin to be a prerequisite for beauty.
Beauty in Terms of Heart
The inner beauty of the country seems to be similar to that of Japan in many aspects as a neighboring Asian country.
In Vietnam, there is a saying from Chinese Confucianism: “Tam tòng, tứ đức” (三从四德).
San从四德” is what women were supposed to follow in ancient China. The word “三从” means to follow one’s father before marriage, one’s husband after marriage, and one’s children after the husband’s death, while “四德” means the four virtues. In Vietnamese, these four virtues together are called ” Công, Dung, Ngôn, Hạnh “.
“Công”
“Công”
ーCông” means a woman who is able to fulfill the role of a woman in the home. It indicates a woman’s ability to do household chores such as cleaning and cooking, sewing, and raising children.
“Dung”
ーIt represents a woman with a beautiful face, modest, calm and firm to the core.
“Ngôn”
ーIt refers to a woman who is polite in her language and speaks and behaves in a modest and gracious manner.
“Hạnh”
ーIt refers to feminine morality and represents a woman who is faithful and a firm defender of her family and traditions. In a family, integrity is considered the most important virtue of the four, as it is important to be able to care for parents, husband, and children, as well as the family on the husband’s side of the family.
“Công, Dung, Ngôn, Hạnh” is considered an old saying among the Vietnamese, and these values may not fit well in modern times. However, the elements of “responsible,” “solid core,” “careful in behavior,” and “respectful to family” are still very important today, and a woman who has all four of these elements is definitely beautiful.
Incidentally, in the Vietnamese matchmaking program “ban muon hen ho,” there is a part where the host asks men and women, “What kind of the opposite sex do you prefer? Here, Vietnamese men often mention opinions that refer to the inside, such as a woman who is family oriented, faithful, and can take good care of her family.
Although not limited to Vietnam, I feel that the “condition of beauty” is not limited to external appearance, but also includes the necessary condition of inner beauty.
Vietnamese Women’s Views and Values on Marriage
We have introduced the values of beauty held by Vietnamese women, but what should one keep in mind when actually dating a Vietnamese woman? In addition, it is important for men to know what kind of thinking and values are often seen in Vietnamese women, not only in private, but also when interacting with them on the job.
In recent years, many Japanese-Vietnamese international couples have been increasing and many of them are getting married. In such a situation, there may be many surprises for Japanese men due to cultural differences and differences in the living environment they have been living in. Of course, the reverse is also true, and there may be situations where Vietnamese women are surprised.
Income
I feel that the first thing that Vietnamese women focus on in a marriage is whether or not the man has a solid income. A man’s income is a very important part of supporting a family. Vietnamese women are hard workers, but many women themselves find it difficult to get married without a stable family.
Sense of Distance (physical or emotional)
Many Vietnamese women are more constrained than Japanese women. Not all of them, of course, but it is common to hear that they are more restrictive with their girlfriends and husbands. They tend to be particularly strict about late nights, not replying within a certain time, and female friends on the male side. When I listen to the men around me who are dating or married to Vietnamese women, 80% of them feel that they are being butt-hurt.
Before Having A Relationship
There are also some difficulties regarding distance before going out. Vietnamese people are said to have relatively less personal space than Japanese. Also, many Vietnamese women are kind. As a man, if they are kind to you and physically close to you, there may be situations where you may think that they are…maybe…. It would be disastrous if you make a mistake, so it might be a good idea to have this perception beforehand.
